50 années depuis l’an 1000 se sont écoulées. Au royaume de France, dans le duché de Normandie, le jeune homme, descendant des terribles vikings et né bâtard, devient le maître incontesté de la Normandie. Il va conquérir le royaume d’Angleterre et laisser une empreinte profonde dans l’histoire…
After the turn of the first millennium, 50 years went by. In the kingdom of France, in the duchy of Normandy, the young man, descended from the dreaded Vikings, and born a bastard, became undisputed master of Normandy. He would go on to conquer England and have a profound impact on the course of history.
1050 à Eu : Guillaume épouse sa cousine éloignée, Mathilde, fille de Baudouin, comte de Flandre.
1050 : Eu, William married his distant cousin, Matilda, daughter of Baudouin, Count of Flanders.
Le pape Léon IX condamne ce mariage. Guillaume passe outre mais négocie.
Pope Leo IX forbade this marriage. William, however, took no notice. But he entered into negotiations with the Pope.
En 1059, Lanfranc, bon orateur, obtiendra le pardon du pape Nicolas II. Le couple ducal, pour être pardonné, fera construire deux abbayes à Caen.
In 1059, Lanfranc, excellent advocate for the married couple, would obtain Pope Nicholas II’s pardon for them. In return for this pardon, the Duke and Duchess would build two abbeys in Caen.
Vers 1050, Guillaume convoque son cousin, Guillaume Werlenc, comte d’Avranches. Il donne son comté à son frère Robert de Conteville. Werlenc s’exile. Il assiège son oncle le comte d’Eu, Guillaume Busac, qui s’exile également.
Around 1050, William summoned his cousin, Guillaume Werlenc, Count of Avranches, and gave Werlenc’s county to his own brother, Robert de Conteville. Werlenc went into exile. William besieged Werlenc’s uncle, Guillaume Busac, Count of Eu, who went into exile, too.
En 1051 en Angleterre : Guillaume rend visite à son cousin le roi d’Angleterre, Édouard le Confesseur.
1051 : England, William visited his cousin, Edward the Confessor, King of England.
Allié au roi de France, Guillaume attaque le comté d’Anjou à Mouliherne.
As an ally of the King of France he had to join his attack on the Count of Anjou at Mouliherne.
1051-1052 à Domfront : Guillaume assiège alors la ville de Domfront qui capitule au printemps 1052.
1051 - 1052 : Domfront, Then William besieged the town of Domfront, which surrendered in the spring of 1052.
Il attaque Alençon. Injurié par ses défenseurs, il les fait mutiler atrocement.
He attacked Alençon. Its defenders insulted him, so he inflicted terrible mutilations on them.
1052 à Arques : Guillaume se saisit du château d’Arques car son seigneur complote contre lui.
1052 : Arques, William seized Arques castle, because its lord was plotting against him.
Soutenu par le roi de France, le comte d’Arques reprend le château.
With the support of the King of France, the Count of Arques took back the castle.
Assiégé par le duc, Arques se rend au début de l’année 1054.
Duke William besieged the castle and Arques surrendered at the beginning of 1054.
1054 à Mortemer : L’armée française envahissant la Normandie, est surprise et mise en déroute à Mortemer.
1054 : Mortemer ; The army of the King of France invaded Normandy, but was surprised and routed at Mortemer.
